Participant Driven Session: Mixing Hands-On with Do-Not-Touch: Workshop Session on Teaching with Special Collections

Sponsored by: Simon Beattie

Taking up the “outreach” component of this year’s theme, this session will focus on pooling our ideas and experiences with active learning in the special collections classroom. Many librarians have experimented with techniques from the simple think-pair-share to the flipped classroom, but we can always use more ideas and learn from those who’ve tried things out. We will discuss pros, cons, and challenges in employing active learning strategies, then break into groups focused on different challenges. Possible areas include: spicing up the show-and-tell, designing meaningful small-group learning opportunities, collaborating with faculty on assignments, troubleshooting past experiences, maximizing one-on-one teaching. We will compile and share suggestions electronically. The overall goal will be to strengthen and broaden our toolkits for teaching with special collections materials.

Discussion Leaders:
Molly Schwartzburg, University of Virginia
