Participant Driven Session: Diverse Dilemmas: Balancing Work & Family

Sponsored by: Bonhams

While juggling personal and professional obligations is not a new experience, it still requires a balancing act that can be challenging. For those in special collections, this challenge is compounded by the fact that career advancement is frequently contingent on extra professional obligations: publishing, professional development, and committee service. Developing a strategy to meet the evolving demands of work, family, and self requires dedication and flexibility, both personally and institutionally. Potential topics: How can I make time to attend conferences and publish? How can I thoughtfully plan for an extended leave? How can I talk to my supervisor about flexible scheduling? What resources are available to help me? We will encourage a frank discussion of our experiences, and strategies for navigating this terrain.

Discussion Leaders:
R. Arvid Nelsen, University of Minnesota, Charles Babbage Institute
Melanie J. Meyers, The Center for Jewish History
Anna Dysert, McGill University
