Seminar: Capturing the Web: Web Archiving in Cultural Heritage Institutions

Considering starting or expanding your institution’s web archiving program? Curious about issues and methods? The web is by far the most accessed and democratic publishing medium ever invented. Concurrently, web content is among the most overlooked primary source material in collection development. The community is still in the foundational stages of sharing information and developing best practices. This seminar will examine web archiving from four perspectives. Jason Kovari will introduce workflows and technical solutions. Christie Peterson will discuss collection development in the web archiving community. Jackie Dooley will highlight OCLC Research’s efforts to assess community needs for best practices and metadata guidelines. Finally, Kristen Yarmey will discuss implementing a web archiving program with limited resources.

Moderator: Jason Kovari, Cornell University
